Intuition

Physics connects mathematical models to physical reality: Every physics equation represents a relationship between measurable quantities. The art of physics is applying the right model to the right situation.

Why it matters: Physics understanding enables technological innovation and explains natural phenomena from everyday events to cosmic processes.

The key insight: Units are your built-in error checker, if the units do not balance on both sides of an equation, something is wrong.

Common Mistakes

Confusing centripetal and centrifugal forces: Centripetal force is real and directed toward the center of circular motion. Centrifugal force is a fictitious force perceived in a rotating reference frame. In inertial frames, only centripetal force exists.

Using the wrong value for g in energy calculations: Gravitational potential energy mghmgh assumes constant gg near Earths surface. For satellite orbits or large height changes, use U=−GMm/rU = -GMm/r. Using mghmgh for orbital mechanics gives wrong answers.

Confusing current and voltage in circuit analysis: Current is the flow rate of charge (amperes). Voltage is the energy per unit charge (volts). In series circuits, current is the same; voltage divides. In parallel circuits, voltage is the same; current divides.
