Intuition

Mathematics is the language of patterns and relationships: Every mathematical concept describes a pattern, from the symmetry of geometry to the rates of change in calculus. Recognising these patterns is the key to mathematical problem-solving.

Why it matters: Mathematical proficiency is essential for science, engineering, technology, and financial literacy.

The key insight: In mathematics, the method matters as much as the answer, a correct approach with an arithmetic error earns more marks than a guessed answer.

Common Mistakes

Confusing probability with odds: Probability = favorable/total outcomes. Odds = favorable/unfavorable outcomes. Converting between them: P(A) = odds/(1+odds). Using the wrong formula gives incorrect probability values.

Forgetting boundary conditions in differential equations: When solving y′′+y=0y'' + y = 0 with y(0)=1,y′(0)=0y(0) = 1, y'(0) = 0, you must apply both conditions to find the specific solution. Using only one condition leaves an arbitrary constant, giving the general solution instead.

Misidentifying conic sections from equations: x2+y2=r2x^2 + y^2 = r^2 is a circle. x2/a2+y2/b2=1x^2/a^2 + y^2/b^2 = 1 is an ellipse. x2/a2−y2/b2=1x^2/a^2 - y^2/b^2 = 1 is a hyperbola. The sign between the squared terms determines the conic type.
