HSC Exam Glossary — Key Terms
HSC Structure
Section titled “HSC Structure”HSC (Higher School Certificate): The qualification earned by students in New South Wales, Australia, upon completing secondary school.
NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority): The body that sets the HSC curriculum, administers exams, and awards results.
ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank): A rank from 0 to 99.95 determining university eligibility.
Year 12: The final year of secondary school when HSC examinations are taken.
Preliminary Course: The first half of a HSC subject, studied in Year 11.
HSC Course: The second half of a HSC subject, studied and examined in Year 12.
Units: Each subject is worth 2 units. The ATAR is calculated from the best 10 units (including compulsory English).
Category A Subjects: Subjects that count towards the ATAR calculation.
Category B Subjects: Subjects that do not count towards the ATAR (e.g., some vocational courses).
School-Assessed Component (SAC): Assessment tasks completed at school, contributing to the HSC mark.
Preliminary Results: Year 11 results that do not count towards the ATAR but are reported on the Record of Achievement.
Mathematics Levels
Section titled “Mathematics Levels”General Mathematics: Covers financial mathematics, measurement, statistical investigation, and algebraic modelling.
Mathematics Standard 2: Covers algebra, measurement, financial modelling, and statistics.
Mathematics Advanced: Covers functions, calculus, financial modelling, and statistics.
Mathematics Extension 1: Covers combinatorics, polynomial functions, trigonometric functions, and calculus. Taken alongside Advanced.
Mathematics Extension 2: Covers complex numbers, vectors, proof, mechanics, and harder calculus. The most challenging HSC maths course.
Scaling: Adjustment of HSC marks based on subject difficulty to ensure fairness across different subjects.
Scaled Marks: The marks adjusted by NESA to account for differences in subject difficulty when calculating the ATAR.
Raw Mark: The mark a student receives before scaling is applied.
Internal Assessment: School-based assessment contributing to the HSC mark, typically 50% of the final mark.
External Examination: The final exam set and marked by NESA, typically contributing 50% of the final mark.
Physics Topics
Section titled “Physics Topics”Mechanics: Motion, forces, energy, momentum, and circular motion.
Electricity and Magnetism: Electric fields, magnetic fields, electromagnetic induction, and generators.
Waves and Light: Mechanical waves, electromagnetic spectrum, reflection, refraction, diffraction, and interference.
The Universe: Stellar evolution, cosmology, and the expansion of the universe.
The Motor Effect: Force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field.
Electromagnetic Induction: Faraday’s law and Lenz’s law — generating EMF from changing magnetic fields.
Circular Motion: Objects moving in circles under centripetal force.
Projectile Motion: Motion under gravity with both horizontal and vertical components.
Conservation of Energy: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed.
Conservation of Momentum: Total momentum in a closed system remains constant.
Thermodynamics: Heat, work, and internal energy in physical systems.
Physics Concepts
Section titled “Physics Concepts”Newton’s Laws: Three laws describing the relationship between forces and motion.
Work-Energy Theorem: The net work done on an object equals its change in kinetic energy.
Power: The rate at which work is done or energy is transferred.
Electromagnetic Spectrum: The range of all electromagnetic radiation from radio waves to gamma rays.
Snell’s Law: Relates angles of incidence and refraction: n₁sinθ₁ = n₂sinθ₂.
Diffraction: The bending of waves around obstacles or through openings.
Interference: The superposition of waves producing regions of constructive and destructive interference.
Photoelectric Effect: Electrons emitted from a surface when light of sufficient frequency shines on it.
Atomic Models: Quantum mechanical models of atomic structure.
Nuclear Physics: Radioactive decay, half-life, and nuclear reactions.
Quantum Mechanics: The physics of the very small, describing particles as wavefunctions.
Assessment and HSC Mark
Section titled “Assessment and HSC Mark”HSC Examination: The final examination set and marked by NESA.
Examination Mark: The mark received on the written examination.
Assessment Mark: The mark received from school-assessed work.
Alignment: NESA’s process of adjusting school assessment marks to match exam difficulty.
Final HSC Mark: The combination of examination mark and assessment mark.
Performance Band: The grade awarded based on the final HSC mark (Band 6: 90+, Band 5: 80–89, etc.).
Band 6: Marks 90–100, the highest performance band.
Band 5: Marks 80–89, indicating strong performance.
Band 4: Marks 70–79, indicating competent performance.
Band 3: Marks 60–69, indicating adequate performance.
Band 2: Marks 50–59, indicating limited performance.
Band 1: Marks below 50, indicating very limited performance.
In-depth Investigation: A major research project in Physics, contributing to the HSC mark.
Marking Criteria: The standards NESA uses to assess responses.
University Admissions
Section titled “University Admissions”UAC (Universities Admissions Centre): Processes university applications for NSW and ACT institutions.
ATAR-Based Admission: Admission primarily determined by ATAR score.
Bonus Points: Additional points added to ATAR for achieving in certain subjects or circumstances.
Early Offer: University offers made before ATAR results are released.
Guaranteed ATAR: The ATAR at which a university guarantees a place in a specific course.
Selection Rank: ATAR plus any bonus points, used for university offers.
Preference: The order in which you list university courses in your UAC application.
Adjustment Factors: Points added to ATAR based on location, disadvantage, or subject performance.
Portfolio Entry: University admission based on a portfolio of work rather than ATAR alone.
Interview: Some courses (medicine, arts) require interviews as part of the selection process.
Direct Entry: Admission to university based on criteria other than ATAR, such as portfolio or interview.
Study Strategies
Section titled “Study Strategies”Past Papers: Official NESA exams from previous years, the single best exam preparation resource.
Marking Criteria: Understanding what markers award marks for in each question.
Active Recall: Retrieving information from memory rather than passively reading notes.
Spaced Repetition: Reviewing material at increasing intervals for long-term retention.
Diagnostic Quiz: A short test to identify strengths and weaknesses.
Timed Practice: Completing practice questions under exam conditions.
Flashcards: Study cards for memorizing key formulas and concepts.
Study Timetable: A planned schedule allocating specific time blocks to each subject.
